Kahlo’s bed provided refuge when she was ill and served as the site of many gatherings with family and friends at the Blue House. Throughout her life, she continued to suffer from poor health, causing her to spend extended periods of time in bed. It was in her bed that Kahlo began her career as an artist, creating many of her early works with the help of a custom easel given to her by her parents. Kahlo’s spinal column was broken in three places from the accident her pelvis was fractured, her collarbone, two ribs, and her right leg and foot were all broken. When the ambulance arrived at the scene the medics declared that Kahlo had no hope, and that they needed to tend to other survivors, but Gómez Arias pleaded that they take her with them to the hospital. A worker standing close to the scene of the accident extracted the rod from Kahlo’s body, and Gómez Arias carried her out of the street and placed his coat on top of her. Miraculously, Gómez Arias was able to pull himself up after the collision, but when he went to help Kahlo, he realized that a metal rod had pierced her body. Alejandro Gómez Arias, Kahlo’s boyfriend at the time and fellow Cachucha, was on the bus with Kahlo when the accident occurred. In fact, Rivera would later tell a story of the young Kahlo coming to watch him paint. Kahlo and her friends took up an interest in this larger-than-life figure working at their school. Rivera was one of several artists hired by the department of education to create murals in schools and public buildings to teach the principles of the revolution to the people of Mexico. Kahlo fell in love with one of the leading members of the group, Alejandro Gómez Arias, and he became her first boyfriend.
